Yom Kippur

High Holidays: Yom Kippur and Choosing Life

Yom Kippur is the holiest of days in the Jewish calendar year and it will occur this week.  Find out why Lee Ann is talking about “choosing life” during this holiest of fast days.

Announcement:

Lee Ann will be doing a FREE workshop based on her book, You Are All That: Creating a Great Life with Affirmations on Sunday, October 15th from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Sacred Circle Books,  919 King Street,  Alexandria, VA.  Come say “hi” and learn something you may not already know.  Or maybe just get a refresher!

Quotes from today’s episode:

“In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall practice self-denial; and you shall do no manner of work, neither the citizen nor the alien who resides among you.  For on this day atonement shall be made for you, to cleanse you of all your sins; you shall be clean/pure before Adonai. It shall be a Sabbath of complete rest for you and you shall practice self-denial; it is a law for all time.”  Leviticus, chapter 16

“We fast to prove, to ourselves as much as to anyone else, that we are human.”  Rabbi Harold Kushner,  To Life: A Celebration of Jewish Being and Thinking

“The most joyous noise a Jew can hear is the sound of the shofar announcing the end of Yom Kippur, because it means that you have lived through the day of death and not died.  Rosh Hashanah is about reverence and gratitude for life, the mother lode of all religious insight.  Yom Kippur is about telling the worst truth about yourself, and getting new life from that.”   Rabbi Lawrence Kushner

“Days are scrolls: write on them only what you want remembered.”  11th century rabbi, Bachya ibn Pakuda

About the Author Lee Ann Hopkins

"Smile and the world smiles with you." That's the motto she lives by. Lee Ann is perfectly imperfect and unabashed about it even as she strives for higher and "better" every day. Both her can-do and her foibles are as fabulous as her smile. So take a moment and breathe in Lee Ann's "hooray" for today! Ms. Hopkins is host of the podcast Hooray Weekly, founder of The Hooray Daily and Hooray Living, a speaker, writer and do-gooder, who believe-it-or-not has been a public-interest attorney and clergywoman for longer than she cares to admit. Check out her books, You Are All That: Creating a Great Life with Affirmations, and Hooray for You: 365 Get-Up-and-Go-Go Quotes for Your Year. When you write her, send along a clergy and attorney joke. She loves 'em!
